Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is online therapy right for me?

Out of the Box Counseling is a 100% online practice, exclusively serving clients physically located in Florida and South Carolina. Online therapy provides the same benefits as in-person therapy with added convenience, such as no commute and the comfort of connecting from a private, personal space. Research shows that online therapy can be just as effective as face-to-face therapy, sometimes even more so for certain individuals.

What’s your therapeutic style?

My approach is eclectic and personalized, drawing on methods that meet you where you are and support your unique needs. We may use a variety of therapeutic techniques, including Brainspotting, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills training, and outcome-based care (where we monitor progress through assessments to guide our approach). In addition, I incorporate psychoeducation and often assign homework to help you build skills outside of our sessions. These tools are designed to go beyond symptom management and address the underlying root of your challenges, not just the symptoms or consequences.

Why focus on the “root” of my issues?

Many people approach problems by focusing solely on solving the immediate issues and managing consequences, which often results in temporary relief. To create meaningful and lasting change, however, we’ll explore the underlying roots of your challenges—the deeper emotions, beliefs, or past experiences that continue to influence your present. By working through these foundational issues, we can help create lasting shifts that enable you to live a fuller and more balanced life.

I’ve never talked to a therapist before. Isn’t needing help a sign of weakness?

Not at all. Seeking therapy is a powerful act of self-awareness and courage. Recognizing when you need support and reaching out shows strength, not weakness. In our sessions, we'll work together to uncover your strengths and develop skills to navigate the challenges you're facing.

How is therapy different from talking to friends or family?

Therapy offers a unique, judgment-free space where a licensed mental health professional can guide you toward new insights and skills. Unlike friends or family, I provide professional expertise and therapeutic tools to help you approach issues with fresh perspectives. Importantly, everything you share in therapy is confidential, so you can feel safe and open to explore difficult topics.

Why not just take medication instead of talking to a therapist?

Medication can be beneficial, especially for managing symptoms, but it often works best when combined with therapy. Together, we’ll explore the underlying issues contributing to your concerns and build on your strengths to help you reach your goals. Therapy focuses on lasting change, which medication alone may not provide.

What should I expect from sessions?

Sessions are tailored to your unique needs and goals. I combine techniques like Brainspotting, EMDR, DBT skills training, and more, alongside psychoeducation and guided exercises. Each tool is chosen specifically to help you understand and transform the deeper roots of your concerns. Often, I’ll provide activities to reinforce the skills we discuss so that you can make progress between sessions and deepen your self-understanding.

How long will I need to be in therapy?

The length of therapy varies based on individual goals, challenges, and personal growth. Some clients find significant progress in a few months, while others benefit from longer-term support. We’ll regularly review your progress to make sure we’re on track and moving toward your goals.

How can I get the most out of therapy?

Engaging in the process actively and consistently, both during sessions and with any outside exercises or reflections I provide, will enhance the impact of therapy. The more you bring your whole self to the process, the more rewarding the journey can be.

Do you work with children, teens, couples, or families?

While I have experience with children, couples, and families, I now focus solely on working with adult women and LGBTQIA+ individuals. My specialization includes trauma, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, addiction, and more. My goal is to help you manage emotions, understand your story, and begin to heal from past traumas.

If you have additional questions or are curious about therapy with me, feel free to reach out! Therapy is a journey we’ll navigate together, and each step is designed to support and empower you.
